Purple Sage Farms is a family owned and operated organic farm in Middleton, Idaho. We grow fresh
herbs, greens, and specialty produce in greenhouses and also raise grass-fed, hormone-
and-antibiotic-free sheep, goats and cattle.
Tim Sommer and Tamara Sloviaczek started the operation in 1988, as part of a plan to return to
the farming life of their childhoods. Careers had taken them further away from their families and
the life they wanted for themselves and their children (pictured at left). So, they began
planning a way to return home.
The best part of those plans was the decision to start farming organically and growing unique
and flavorful foods, very different from the typical farming practices of the area and the state.
Tim collaborated to organize Idaho’s existing organic farmers into the Idaho Organic Growers
Association. The association advocated for and developed an organic certification program through
the Idaho Department of Agriculture, established in 1990.
Our farm’s mission to introduce people to healthy, fresh and flavorful food has been the focus
since then. Tim and Tamara bring awareness to organic and local agriculture in Idaho by
participating in the local community of growers. They believe in their community and in Idaho's
potential to produce great sustainable food.
The kids all know what it is like to cut thousands of pounds of basil during the hot summer
season. The family not only works together but also plays music together, mandolin, fiddle, and
guitar along with an occasional bagpipe tune.
